More justification (in my mind) for my summer project in the US

Amidst all the busyness and hecticness of preparing for my finals this week, there has been some national news that has hit close to home for me. There is this story about Ron Brown and how he has vocalized the fact that he believes that homosexuality is a sin. (Here's a link if you haven't heard about it Ron Brown defends anti-gay stance) Now as some of you may know and some may not, we (UNO Cru) had Ron Brown come speak to us and I have also heard him speak many times since I was just a little kid. He is an absolutely amazing sold out guy for Jesus whom I respect greatly for his passion.

He has come under a ton of criticism from all sides from Christians to non-Christians. People spewing out things like, "Ron Brown hates gays" and "Ron Brown should just shut up because he is paid by the government". Whether it is from ESPN Ron Brown confusing faith with rights or from Husker Fan Boards HuskerMax.com. Now, first of all, Ron Brown has never once stated that he hated gays or has he lived that way or even so far as condoned anyone to do this. He even coaches a Muslim and they get along just fine, no discrimination there just like in the rest of his life. Cutting across the boundary of religion. He has simply called a spade a spade and stated that homosexuality is a sin according to the Bible. There has been so much hate coming from the ones who are saying that all he does is hate; it is quite ironic and easy to observe the hypocrisy spewing from their mouths.

I state all of this to illustrate how messed up our culture currently is and how far we have come from the morals of the founding fathers of America to where we are now. With how irritated it makes me that Ron Brown and his message is misconstrued, I feel even so much more amped up and excited for my missions trip to where else but the United States! Orlando, Florida to be exact. I am more and more convinced the closer that I get to this, that I made the right decision on how to spend my summer this year. Maybe if more Christians realized what our situation is right here in the US, then we would be more proactive, more loving, and more willing to share the greatest news ever in the world: that we are all sinners in need of someone to pay the price of our sinfulness to God and that God has sent his son Jesus to do this. He died, taking on all the world's sin, as a payment for all humanity. If we do not realize our sinfulness, whether it is as simple as lying or a homosexual lifestyle, any one of those sins leads to eternal separation from God, then we will never acknowledge our need for a savior, Jesus Christ. I know that I am a sinner who is far from perfect and I need Jesus' grace just as much as any homosexual, and that is why I trust in Christ for my salvation.

Summer 2012

So here goes my attempt at one of these blog things...
This summer I am going to be extremely busy, but it is going to be amazing! I am going to be going on a study abroad trip to Italy for 3 weeks following the end of the spring semester. We will be visiting about 6 different cities there going around learning about the architecture there. We will get to visit Rome, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Florence, and other great places. Then immediately after that program ends I will be flying directly from Italy to Orlando, FL where I will be on a summer project for Cru! This summer I have an unbelievable opportunity to take part in a 10-week summer project at Walt Disney World . I an about 60 other college students involved with the project will be working Walt Disney World and building relationships with our coworkers there. I will also have opportunities to share my faith with vacationers and college students around Orlando. Our group will be involved in outreaches at resort areas, on local campuses, and in the community. At the same time I will be in a small group Bible study. It will be an incredible opportunity to share the gospel with people from all over the world right here in the United States.

On a related note, I still am in need of quite a bit of funds for this summer project, so if you feel so inclined, I would greatly appreciate prayers for finances and if you would like to help me out, you can contact me, and I would be more than happy to give you more info about it.

So needless to say, it will be a crazy summer filled with fun, adventure, and Jesus! Since I am required to keep a blog for my Italy study abroad trip, and since I will not be around Nebraska at all this summer until August 4th or so, I wanted to keep a record of this and keep up to speed whoever wants to know what I'm up to this summer. So here's my blog and I hope you all enjoy!
